The long-term management of chronic insomnia: recommendations for primary care physicians

چکیده

Insomnia is a highly prevalent condition that often becomes chronic and is associated with significant psychiatric and medical morbidity. There are several efficacious strategies for the treatment of insomnia. Historically, however, there has been little advice for the long-term management of this condition. This article: reviews the historical context for the treatment strategies currently available; previews, in a general way, the new therapies in development; and suggests reasonable practice guidelines for both the shortand long-term management of insomnia.
